Starting lineman - August, 2023

Updated: Apr 28

My plan since middle school has been to study science in college. Attending the Michigan Math and Science Scholars program on the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus was preparation for this goal. This program was much more involved and gave me a very realistic college experience. I feel like I got a sense of what I would be doing in the field of science during this program. While the content on the whole was interesting, the actual lab work felt like high school with a lecture and then intense lab work for hours without any practical application. I realized that this format is not how I want to learn new material and that I just can't spend days on end in a lab without more opportunities for active learning. I can use my skills in other ways so it is time to look at other majors for college.

This month, much to my surprise, I found myself in the starting lineup for our team. I had never played a game of football before in my life and had not really memorized any of the plays in the play book. My experience from soccer was a major factor because my agility and speed as a lineman was uniqe trait that I brought to the team. The coach recognized my strong work ethic and positive attitude even when workouts were tough and I was absolutely exhausted and ready to fall over.

As the season approached, I played in my first real scrimmage game. I watched as one of my fellow lineman, who was 30 pounds heavier than me, immediately injured the opposing team's lineman with one tackle. As I saw myself continuing to lose weight, I realized that I could have been the one on the ground in pain. When I started to play, I didn't see the sport as violent in practice. I just liked the intensity of the sport and the fact that I was getting into better shape. In reality, playing football as a lineman just did not fit my personality and my character. I just couldn't see myself hitting other people hard enough to actually injure them.

With Junior year coming and a set of rigorous classes, I decided that it would be best for me to work out on my own. Also, the coaches required the team to attend a range of meetings and events to promote the football team and I realized that this would take my much-needed time from my studying. Everyone was shocked when I told them I would not be joining the team but I know that I made the right decision.
