Servant Leader - April, 2023

Updated: Apr 28

In second grade, I truly learned what it means to be a servant leader. My teacher, Mrs. Rahman, embodies the best qualities of a servant leader and I have admired and respected her since that time. Mrs. Rahman is the kind of person who always encourages others. In her class, I could always count a big smile and a warm welcome every morning. Positive words and a quick hug were very common whenever I felt discouraged. To this day when I see her during the occasional holiday break, she continues to encourage me to work hard and to push myself to do my best work.

A servant leader puts others before themselves. You could always tell that Mrs. Rahman spent hours after school and into the evening hours preparing engaging materials for her classes. She would always set aside time after school to help those who fell behind. Once she even made us her signature ramen. Everyone loved the ramen from Mrs. Rahman! At just four feet, eight inches, I literally looked up to her as a young boy but now I actually look towards her as a valued mentor and a person I really admire.

This selfless woman continues to have a positive influence on me. I will never forget the positive impact of an encouraging word or a pat on the back. Mrs. Rahman always made herself available for her students. This is just one of the reasons why she was the most respected teacher in the school.

As a high school student, I am working hard to emulate her by supporting classmates who are struggling and helping them with school assignments. I take the time to carefully explain ideas and give useful examples. Because I studied Kumon for most of my elementary school years, my mental math is fairly strong, which helps me to grasp new math concepts in my classes. If I continue to find ways to encourage others and to put others before myself, one day I am sure that I will become a servant leader just like Mrs. Rahman.

I've decided to start a foundation to demonstrate my servant leader character. I have a lot of advantages in my life and I know that I can continue to support other teenagers.
